Gemstone: Larimar
Gemstone: Larimar
Larimar is a rare precious gem that is only found in the Dominican Republic. A local explorer who found this beautiful stone in a remote mountain range there gave it a name that combined his daughterÕs name, Larissa, with the Spanish word for ÔseaÕ, mar. The name Larimar was born.
After nearly 50 years of mining, the higher quality Larimar are now more than 500 feet underground. The Larimar mines are considered artisan, since they rely primarily on human, physical labor. I love that a cooperative of local villages manages the mining of each piece of Larimar. They also ensure that members of their local communities are the only ones mining rather than big foreign companies.
Known best for itÕs bright, robinÕs egg blue, Larimar is also found in these more subtle tones, speckled with pinks and browns. This sweet little bracelet hand-knotted on Dusty Rose silk and accented with with 14k Gold Beads.
(Standard length for this piece is 6.75" - if you require shorter or longer, please request so in comments during check out.)
